FYI, the Grand Wailea (Hilton) in Maui has done what the OP described. When a poster tried to book an award stay, they deducted 70k HHHonors points per night AND charged $1000 ("confidential rate") to his cc, which they said they'd keep if he didn't show up. See posts 95-100 in the following thread:

I also recently booked one award night at the Sheraton Maui using SPG points. (My flight leaves at 10pm and I wanted a place to shower/change, so I booked a room for one night.) Not only did they deduct the points from my SPG account, but the rep said that they'd charge $1000 to my cc if I was a no-show. For one night. (But, no, they didn't charge me for it right away.)
