Personally my favourite Hollinghurst is
The Folding Star - both British AND set in Flanders, what more could you want!
At Swim, Two Boys by Jamie O'Neill is an Irish gay epic!
The Lost Language of Cranes and
The Page Turner by David Leavitt are both a good read.
Anything by Sarah Waters - being 'lesbian' books should not make them any less recommendable!
Tipping the Velvet and
The Night Watch are highly praised.
For a bit of escapist fun, you could try Mark Gatiss's Lucifer Box novels -
The Vesuvius Club and
Devil in Amber.
I still have not read it, but Quentin Crisp's
The Naked Civil Servant is of course a classic.
That's all I can think of off the top of my head.
