JOUY31 Thank you for the welcome - sorry about posting in the wrong thread, I had a feeling it wasn't right, but I couldn't see the "right" one.

circusboy I'm flying Shannon-ORD, then ORD-Seattle (on a through-ticket with IE). it's too late and too expensive to change that now. But, can I ask why you say I can't use the check-in machines (as suggested by JAP)? I have used them before for SNN to USA hubs, usually by checking in online. But I'm not sure if I can do it with a ticket that includes 2 airlines. (IE and AA).

JAP Thanks, also, for the welcome! I was thinking that I might check-in online (or at the kiosks at SNN) and just hold back my carry-on bag. It's worth a try!
