President's Club upgrade from lower category?

I have always reserved at least a mid-size car and have almost always received my two-category upgrade for President's Club. There have been a few times when reserving full-size that we only got upgraded to premium (one category upgrade), but sometimes to a luxury. We've even received a triple upgrade once from a reserved mid-size to a premium. And we've been able to ask for a convertible once and gotten it without a problem.

We've decided we don't really need as big a car as we usually rent since we don't drive as much on our vacations any more (it's just my husband and me), and with the price of petrol, we might as well be a bit more economical. So we wouldn't mind driving a mid-size (group C) or maybe even a group B.

In the past, I've always reserved the smallest car I thought we'd be satisfied with for any trip, in case no upgrade was forthcoming. That's fine with a mid-size as we could manage just fine. But we're always upgraded to at least full-size.

I'm tempted to try reserving a category A or B, hoping to be upgraded to a mid-size. But I'm a little nervous about the idea of reserving the smallest category, counting on the two-category upgrade, and finding ourselves really in a sub-compact for 2-3 weeks.

So, what are people's experience, either as President's Club members or even Avis First, when reserving a category A or B, and expecting a two-category upgrade? We rent out of MCO.

Thanks,
Susan
