If you decide to chance getting the bags on board, one option is to head over to the Schengen Senator lounge and have breakfast (better than on the plane; sleep instead if you are able). They have lockers in the Sen lounge where you can store your bag. You can also have the agent get you a good seat before you head into town. I would go to Wiesbaden or Mainz.
