Do they do anything special on-board to bring in the new years ...and if so, what time do they base new years on?
The crew enacts an ancient tradition that goes back to Australia's roots as a penal colony. They hide all the premium champagne and cackle madly while the F pax scramble about the cabin in search of champers.

At least that's what they do on my flights.

On landing the beagles sniff you up and you get to go in a special line.

on a serious note:LAX-SYD service is a lot different from SYD-LAX service. The crew have a short layover in LAX and a lot to do during their stay (increasingly more as the AUD gains in value). So they are keen to get the F service over with and the pax bedded down for the flight. 90% of crews are like this, and you simply won't get the real QF F experience out of LAX. For pre-NYE LAX layovers they will have an exceptionally hectic ground schedule, and won't really have much inclination to do much for you onboard. Holiday service is markedly worse than at other times, fwiw.
