As far as keeping the two seats, make sure you book the extra seat in the same pnr as his. Usually they will book it just like second passenger in the pnr with last name extraseat first name the last name of the passenger. So the name fields in the pnr would look something like this:

Smith/John
Extraseat/Smith


If you can, book via our own res line or at least call our line within 8 hours of booking through a 3rd party call and get confirmed seat assignments. While this isn't 100% that you'll keep the seats, you're less likely to loose the assignments.
