You are right, I just did this a few months ago as well.... But now I was told that the rules have changed for 2008!
And of course I called again and spoke to three different people.... but as you know, they keep records on the file so they give you all the same answer. I suspect the rule is new, it can be interpreted in different ways, and until someone from Air Canada / Aeroplan management clarifies it, it may well be misunderstood!
