It may depend on your history with UA
I was 1K. Hardly flew at all the next year, and UA only sent me back one level the, even though I didn't qualify even for premier.

However, the next year, the exact thing you described happened to me. I lost my status completely, along with the E+ seats I'd reserved while I was still PE.
