I agree with this entirely.

Also worth considering would be destinations that can be reached by an overnight train ride. Theoretically you could leave Amsterdam on a Friday evening train, arrive pretty much in the centre of your destination on Saturday morning and depart on Sunday night so that you arrive in time for work on Monday. Even if it's a little more expensive than a comparable flight, you are saving one night's accommodation costs (I'm assuming you'll get a bed in the train). I personally find this to be much more relaxing than flying.
