It does depend on what activities you want.

For outdoor/natural beauty, San Diego has some awesome beaches. But, depending on the time of year, can be cold/chilly/foggy.

With Las Vegas there is hiking, Hoover Dam, Lake Mead, and if you could get to Zion or Bryce Canyon National Parks in southern Utah (~2 hours), you will never forget their awesome, incredible beauty!
