Because there is less competition to BOS as well. The NYC-MSP market has something like 5 carriers (including an LCC into the same airport) flying a ton of seats. BOS-MSP has one carrier. I'd rather compete against one than five. There is the other side, which is that if the loads demanded it someone else would step in, but I'm guessing NW is pretty aggressive at defending MSP and that, combined with no carrier hubbing at BOS means only NW serves that route.

Sure, but they haven't done it that way too often previously. I actually can't think of a city where they've showed up so aggressively. I'm guessing that the amortization of the advertising costs is a pittance relative to the cost of flying a bunch of empty planes around hoping that traffic shows up.
