It is possible to get past security without a same-day ticket.
From my Delta mileage statement, in a paragraph about reserving conference rooms in a Crown Room Club:

Anyone know how to get past security if you aren't traveling? Is it a special pass at the check-in counter?
Does only DL do this, or does UA have a similar procedure?
