Now that is an excellent question, and one that most people don't ask near enough. Since airline travel is so statistically safe, I would wager that there are many things the money could be spent on that are more cost effective.
Of course, the total maximization of safety and long term well being probably means scrapping the trip entirely and putting the money into the baby's college fund.
