The majority of guests don't know or care about those promotions.

I always find it very humorous when people complain about promotions or status given away for free. Once given away or earned through a promo, those people are either going to do 25/50 stays/nights or they aren't. If they don't, then they aren't staying that much and their status will expire. If they do, then they simply got status a little bit before they would have earned it anyway, and the promo offer may have persuaded them to give the chain more business.
