That makes the most sense, but at about 10:30pm the night before my flight (I'm on pacific time), I called the EXP desk and they let me do the confirmed standby. Not sure if it's an EXP thing or there's a particular timezone - central, maybe? - that they base it on.

Well, what was the local departure time?
AA doesn't call it "same day" to my knowledge (DL does). If you are within 12 hours of the scheduled local departure time, you can do what AA calls a CFC ("confirmed flight change") as long as the inventory is available. In general you need at least Y6-Y7 to succeed.
