Well, what was the local departure time?

AA doesn't call it "same day" to my knowledge (DL does). If you are within 12 hours of the scheduled local departure time, you can do what AA calls a CFC ("confirmed flight change") as long as the inventory is available. In general you need at least Y6-Y7 to succeed.
