This way, the aircraft does not have to sit overight in CAN for 17 hours, instead one of the 777s can fly into CAN in the late afternoon, and do CAN-NRT in early morning. This will also capture some local NRT-CAN traffic.
No, terms of the latest US - China treaty require SFO-CAN be operated non-stop from the USA.
