Yup - lack of seat selection annoys many. NZ used to have a booking engine (not the main one) that allowed seat selection but removed it late last year.

Seats not guaranteed but I wouldn't worry too much. Very rarely have I not got my selected seats on NZ. I think they make such a point of saying that because of complaints from americans who thought a seat selection is a guarantee.
