He's ALWAYS trying to upgrade using miles!!! This was actually about a year ago, so it's probably not the trip you're thinking of.

Funny story, though, which is slightly off-topic: They were just here, and had forgotten that they only upgraded using miles for the PHL-LAX leg. They thought US had given their "favorite" F seats away for the LAX-PHL leg (i.e. switched them from Row 2 to Row 4 on a 321), and were ready to fire off a complaint to Customer Relations....until they realized that they did not use miles to upgrade (because no mileage upgrades were available!)....and were auto-assigned seats in Row 4 at the 3-day window.
