I've done that before to get a trip into downtown Chicago. No problem at all.

The 4 hour rule is for confirmed seating -- initial booking or confirmed changes. If you want to make a confirmed change to move up the first flight, thus breaking the connection, then you would have to pay a fare difference. Flying standby, it doesn't matter.
