I can confirm and in fact I was TOLD BY TSA to hold them in my closed fist at some point in my travels. It happened when I forgot to take all of the change out of my pocket but I had already sent my bags through. The TSA told me to just close my hand around them and I walked through with no issues. Yeah, I feel a lot safer since.
