Surprised nobody mentioned the wild card AS yet.

The OP mentioned specifically earning miles and keeping costs down. AS has its perks in that the OP can pick and choose low airfares as he sees fit among multiple partner carriers.

Of course, he'd miss out on the priority services such as premium check-in and preboarding... and upgrades.
