I would not go with AA on this. They treat their domestic elites like absolute rubbish and you don't even get a beer if you get one of their lounges. AA's program is really biased towards international travel.

Go with Northwest. You can fly on NW, Continental, Alaska or Delta and get miles on each one. Once you get elite on Northwest, they will upgrade you automatically where they can.
