Yes, they replied but you must buy the ticket first then upgrade.

Did you not check on line first for availability for the upgrade- and if so why did you not book it on line?

BA should be honest about this and advise their customers of how they operate the whole airmiles system.
They are not stand-by upgrades- and I beleive they are quite open about how the MFU works- Find dates that are available and move your booking it will be worth the 20GBP or 50GBP (not sure what it is anymore form DXB) or so it costs to change.
