Not to sure I agree with that statment. Australia has some very good tourist train journeys, which are designed and priced for tourists (Ghan/Indian Pacific etc). As far as Australia having a good rail network that is not true. The trains are old often delayed/canceled and in many cases once you get off the main coastal routes are coach replacement services.
