If the dog is coming cargo, you may need to pick the dog up at a cargo facility that is not part of AA's terminal at JFK. I saw a DL pax going through this at JFK last month--she was told at the baggage office that she needed to go (on her own) to DL's cargo facility.

Unless you get direct work from an FTer who has experienced cargo-shipping a dog on AA to JFK, call AA and figure out where you'll need to go.
