AT&T data card works reasonably well on NYC-Washington route, I do this every few weeks. For the first hour out of NYC it has a 3G connection pretty much continually, after that it drops down to 2.5G for quite a lot of the time, and the signal drops altogether from time to time, especially just before / after Baltimore.
