To the OP, if you buy a Y ticket and use a VIP, you're gonna sit in J and cannot upgrade to F. Period.
And, the OP would be the last J pax ugraded to F if Y is oversold (paid J will go before Y upgrades regardless of status)...AA doesn't like to do two class upgrades..Plan to sit in J.
