I've taken to checking ual.com, orbitz, AND expedia.
If all are the same, or ual.com is lowest (almost never!), I book there: 1k bonus miles.
Usually, though, Orbitz has the best fare. Sometimes it won't let you
book that fare, though.
I've had Expedia beat both Orbitz and ual.com by 50% before on a DCA-PBI itinerary. I've also had Expedia price out fares that would return errors at ual & orbitz (my xmas BWI-DEN-SFO-FAT-SFO-SEA-YKM-SEA-ORD-BWI), and beat the socks off of everyone else's price when I split the ticket in two (BWI-DEN-SFO-FAT-SFO-SEA-ORD-BWI and SEA-YKM-SEA).
The flyertalk rule w/ CSRs? Don't get the answer you want, politely hang up and try another CSR.
Proposed flyertalk rule w/ booking engines? Don't get the fare you want, try another engine.
