The old laptop I use, a Thinkpad A31p, does have a DVI port. So I just use a DVI-HDMI cable for connection. The older Thinkpad A30p and A22p also have DVI output. But yes, you have to look for DVI support in older laptops.
This laptop doesn't need much room near the TV. Combined with the freeware XnView program, it can make a slide show on the fly and burn a copy for your guests if they want it.
