Just to add - no - there is no reason that anyone would deliberately land short under any circumstance. The risks are too great, and the tarmac surface is quite sufficient and indeed far flatter for a belly-landing.
The media indicates that the undercarriage was ripped off due to a hard, short landing caused by circumstances unknown.
I would not place faith at this stage in what an understandably shocked pilot may have said under high stress to "an airport worker", until we know much more.
