The conductors don't check every train so some people will say don't bother validating the ticket b/c then you can use the ticket for your return. I would strongly advise that you stamp the ticket.
Thanks for the reply. I would not imagine not validating the ticket...unless it was not clear how somewhere. In Italy, though, it is pretty clear.
As for the online purchase- it seems that the online ticklets are good for 90 minutes from the time for which they are purchased (the Leonardo hard tickets may not be train specific at all, but the online_purchased-tickets on trenitalia do seem to have a time limit). This would cover any foreseeable delays. The point is moot, though, because the website is, not unexpectedly, broken and keeps denying the charge, whether I use my, or my wife's CC. Not the first time it's failed to work for me...won't be the last
