Leaving tomorrow morning, so we've left this question until the last minute, of course

Cheers.
Leonardo Express Tix are not specific to a given train at a given time. You MUST however validate the ticket before boarding. Look for the yellow box-shaped machines near that will be located near the entrance to the platform. Stick the ticket in and the machine stamps it. Once stamped, you need to take the next train.

The conductors don't check every train so some people will say don't bother validating the ticket b/c then you can use the ticket for your return. I would strongly advise that you stamp the ticket.

#1 - its just cruddy not to stamp the ticket
#2 - when the conductors check tickets they absolutely look for American tourists and impose a significant fine for not validating the ticket which must be paid in cash on board. If you can't pay, then you get to spend a lovely morning at Termini dealing w/train cops.

When you get to Termini - WATCH YOUR BAGS/PERSONAL BELONGINGS
