I hate to tell you guys, but there is official UA policy on this. The policy is that passengers should not be allowed to linger in the galley areas and around the cockpit. The flight crew must call back and verify that the area around the cockpit is clear before opening the door. The only thing inconsistent is the enforcement of the published rules. For any FAs out there who haven't read the rules in their briefings, ask a flight crew about the POSPDs (although they are generally not carried along on the flight).

Has anyone considered that the lav might actually have been inop, but the sink was not? The FAs could have used the sink in the inop lav (broken flush motor, or something similar), while keeping it simple by not telling every pax that they could only use the sink. Just a thought...

Mark, due to the furlough I didn't fly after the end of Sept. I am not sure when the new rules were in effect but the Capts. I was flying with were inconsistent. I just followed their instructions.

Of course I recognize that the sink could be OP while the toilet is INOP. There were many times when we had that situation and used it to wash our hands or reapply the lipstick. No questions were asked, but that was pre-9/11 when people weren't so suspicious of our actions.
