I've actually gone to the A gate checkpoint when things were really FUBAR on D and the main concourse. Might as well get some exercise in as opposed to standing in line.
I routinely go to "A" when I have an early evening departure out of SEA. There are very few early evening departures out of the "A" and "S" gates -- basically a couple of DL mini-jets.
