I would classify Hampton Inns as being in the same general category as Holiday Inn Expresses, rather than Holiday Inns. Both tend to be relatively smaller-size properties, newer, offer a complimentary breakfast, etc., unlike Holiday Inns which tend to be larger, older, no complimentary breakfast, etc., which also make Holiday Inns (in general and in my opinion) to be less desirable than HIXs. So, I might agree with your friend that Hampton Inns are preferable (again in general) to Holiday Inns. Of course, it all depends on the individual properties and what one is looking for in those stays.

As for Embassy Suites, I find these in quality far above either Staybridge Suites or Candlewood Suites. No contest. Perhaps Homewood Suites would be a closer par to these IHG properties.
