If I have a choice, I will choose to fly VX over Jetblue. VX is simply more fun, and I don't mind paying $25 to grab the bulkhead row and make sure I have all the legroom I need or $175 for a transcon upgrade. I think the seats are more comfortable, too, but that is just personal opinion. Jetblue definitely has the edge on destinations though, and not to quibble but it does fly from SFO to JFK and Boston.
Having said that, I know Jetblue turned a profit within it's first year, which is remarkable. I would be surprised to see VX equal that after losing $35 million in its firs quarter. I'm not sure what the airline could have done differently in the current climate. They are going to have to streamline costs somehow, and I hope they don't lose their focus to do this. During the last quarter VX pulled in 9.3 cents per mile compared to Jetblue's yield of 10.4 cents. This occured while VX passengers paid an average of $359 for an SFO-JFK flight compared to Jetblue where the average cost was only $339. Maybe part of this is due to the startup, but it looks like they are headed in the right direction.
