I haven't heard that statistic, but the OP was correct to ask about specific routes. While that 44.8% number may or may not be true overall, anyone who relies on it to figure upgrade chances will be grossly disappointed since in my experience upgrade chances are so completely route/day of week/time of day specific. If one is FO and flies ATL-LAX in prime time, that upgrade percentage will probably drop to 0.8%.
