You´re correct but going too much into possible tricks makes no sense (since too complicated) for a foreigner just visiting that place for a short period !
But since the OP specifically mentioned travel from Salzburg to elsewhere in Austria, I thought he might benefit from it if he decides to go with a BahnCard instead of a rail pass.
