Northeast Storm: Am I in the Wrong?

Was originally supposed to travel PVD-IAD-GSO tonight at 7:10p but called last night to change to Tuesday at 2:11p because the weather was going to be nasty today (I've been stuck at IAD too many times). Their website says the change fees have been waived for today, but when I called up they wanted to charge me $100. This happened when I called back too. Then, I got someone on the phone who said they would be doing me a one-time favor to waive the fee to switch to Tuesday, but I'd have to called my TA to update the ticket. When I called up the site I booked from, they said they needed to call UA.. who then told them to charge me $100 change fee. What am I missing here? This is my return leg.. and the site says:

"Customers currently en route:
* May make one change to their return trip. Rules and restrictions regarding standard change fees, advance purchase, day or time applications, blackouts, and minimum or maximum stay requirements have been waived. Origin and destination cities must remain the same."

So now I'm booked on Tuesday's 2:11p flight to IAD, but left with a really bad taste in my mouth about UA. I'm preferred on US but their fares were outrageous so I chose UA.. who I usually love! Can someone please let me know what I'm doing wrong?! Over an hour on the phone for something that is normally a quick, painless, FREE change.
