Would any of you attempt doing both in the same day? Anyone care to make the case for one over the other?
I did Hiroshima and Mijiyama as a day trip in Oct of 2007. I took the first Hikari train out of Shin-Osaka (my hotel was in Osaka) to Hiroshima.

I think it was a very enjoyable day trip. I left Hiroshima a little after 1 to head to Mijiyama.

When I got there I ended up taking the scenic route (I got lost ) to the ropeway. I wanted to see the town from the top of Mount Misen before the ropeway closed for the day. I managed to leave enough time to go into the Itsukushima Shrine and walk around a few of the other sites.

I timed my visit to corropond to the high tide at the island so I could see the gate at night floating in the water. That was something to definately see.

I think I took the 19:15 ferry back to the mainland before making my way back to Osaka. I don't think I got back to my hotel until after 10pm.

Just about everything closes on the island at 17:00. From 17:00 until I got the ferry back, the island was very quiet and took on a life of it's own. Everything that was lit up was breathtaking.
