United has started a new policy of pre-emptive cancellation. That is, if they think that there are reasonable odds that a city will get snowed-in, then they will cancel flights into that city so that their planes are not stranded. They did this alot over the past month or so. The theory is that this might screw the passengers going into that specific city, but it keeps more of their planes in play, thereby saving far more people the pain of potential cancellation.
They did this to me last month. They claimed that the official reason for the cancellation was "weather." I pointed out that ATC at the destination airport never halted incoming flights or had any holds on the day of the cancellation. I also pointed out that other airlines had not cancelled very many flights into the destination city. I also pointed out that the official reason for cancellation was given as "OPERATIONS" on the United Cargo web site.
While not admitting guilt, they sent me a $200 travel voucher.
