Good News Re: Cash and Points." In that post, I run the numbers for C&P vs regular awards, and C&P vs Fifth Night Free awards. IMO, C&P awards still beat Fifth Night Free awards.
An advantage to Fifth Night Free is that they don't have the same restrictions on availability that the hotel may put on the C&P award rates. (And if you flat out don't want to put down any cash for the award and strictly want to use points, then C&P is not for you, of course.)
C & P really is one of the many things that makes SPG great!
