Reasonably Priced Idiot-Proof Camera for a Photography Idiot?

Three and a half years ago I grabbed a 4.0 megapixel digital camera off of eBay for cheap and have been running it into the ground ever since. It's a little bulky with not the biggest screen, but the rechargable battery lasts awhile even today.

Dropped it one too many times, I think, and the battery cover is beginning to come off. Lens gets a bit fuzzy at times.

Anyway, time to buy something new, and I really have no idea what I'm looking at when it comes to digital cameras. I'm sure most features are lost on me.

Basically looking for a beginner's camera that'll take nice photos of my travels without too much expertise. I take pictures of my hotel rooms , of sunsets and beaches , and of F cabins and food in restaurants (so prefer decent pictures without flash so as not to disturb other diners or pax).

So.. suggestions?

I'm going to appear like a total dunce, but is this one any good? (Staples has the Canon Powershot SX-100 IS for $199 through Jan 19)

Thanks for any advice.
