Hmmm. As a single female traveller for the past 12 years, think how much risk I've been exposed to, not really worrying about where my room is or booking in non-existent partner's name
Sorry guys, I'm just finding some of the attitudes in these threads a little bit ridiculous. We're women, not fragile stupid creatures! It's getting bad when we have to book our hotel rooms in the names of a man

And I've even had a situation with hotel staff which has made me feel uncomfortable - and I dealt with it, just as I would any other situation - and I still wouldn't book it in the name of a man.
To answer the OP's question - if it isn't a really good establishment, avoid the first floor. If she is on the first floor, get her to check the window is secure. Be wary about who else could have heard the room number if the check-in person decided to announce it to the world in general at check-in. Ignore the advice about being near the lifts - your wife really has a choice, to be worried about some highly unlikely unspecified danger, or be kept awake all night by the noise of the lifts and people coming and going from them (there are generally fire doors near lifts and at night they generally slam!). Personally, I'd take the unlikely and unspecified danger over lack of sleep on a girly weekend - but that's really her choice
