Hang up that PhD; you're worrying needlessly. I've never even thought about asking for a room in a certain location other than my profile with hotel chains--when I have the option--indicates away from the elevator because of the noise.
I leave the privacy card on my door all the time except when I want housekeeping to clean the room.
