Babu - Where is your wife going? Unless she's staying in an inner city somewhere, I would say your worries are way out of proportion to the "danger." You're probably transmitting not-so-subtle messages to both wife and daughter that you don't trust them (especially your wife) to have good judgment and that you think they're incapable of safe travel.
That being said, Analise gave you very good advice, especially about avoiding ground floor rooms and not having your room number announced out loud (I have refused rooms several times when the clerk broadcasted the number for all to hear).
Other things I do to enhance hotel safety:
- Always be aware of others around you
- Don't ride in elevators with doubtful characters
- Use all the door locks and safety devices
- Don't fumble for key or keycard, get it out in the hotel lobby and have it ready to use when approaching the room
- If keycard doesn't work, return immediately to the front desk for help
- Know fire evacuation routes and how to survive a hotel fire
- Don't let a child walk around by herself, say to a breakfast buffet
- Ask for a woman server if ordering room service, do not allow a male server into the room
- To avoid leaving things behind (especially with a child) check all drawers, closets, floors, etc. before checking out
I enjoyed the article in Analise's link. I'm one of those "travels with Clorox wipes" types...
