I once got credit in a scenario somewhat like that ~ a flight cancellation in my F award itinerary booked in XF resulted in my being rebooked. The agent involved perhaps mistakenly rebooked me using F rather than XF.
The miles were indeed credited to my account. And... before long, an audit discovered the error and they were summarily removed from my account.
I can't help but wonder what would have happened if I'd used those miles towards an award before UA discovered its error?
