I've had it happen 3 out of many times. Once AMS-DTW, once EWR-AMS and once MXP-YYZ (on Alitalia). I agree with previous posts that if you ask nicely / jokingly they're fine about it. 2/3 times I haven't know until I was boarding, at which time my boarding pass 'beeped' and they gave me the new magic one!
