Can one fly with hockey or figure skates in a carry-on bag?

I'm departing from the US (TSA security) connecting in YUL (CATSA security) to YYZ and was wondering if hockey or figure skates would be allowed in my carry on baggage? If so it would greatly speed up my travel since I only intend to do carry on and don't want to wait around for baggage at my connection point or final destination.

Please let me know if anyone has any experience with this.
